Overview of Sun World Bana Hills

Sun World Ba Na Hills is a resort 1,487 meters high, which houses an impressive cable car system, a theme park, a European-style village, and whimsical gardens.

This gigantic resort is situated approximately 25 kilometres southwest of Da Nang’s city centre and covers the summit of Mount Chua, making it one of the top global tourism destinations that receives millions of visitors every year.

The complex was first used as a hill station by French settlers in 1919, who sought to escape the heat. Today, Sun World Ba Na Hills has been recognised as Asia‘s Leading Theme Park by the World Travel Awards (WTA) four times in a row. Meanwhile, its iconic Golden Bridge has been given the title of the World’s Leading Iconic Tourist Bridge.

History of Sun World Bana Hills

French Discovery and the Birth of a Hill Station

French captain Debye arrived at the mountains in 1901 when he tried to find relief from the heat in the coastal region of Da Nang.

By 1919, the first hill station villa was constructed by the French, along with a post office and the Debay Ancient Wine Cellar (still there to this day).

It was used as a luxury alpine lounge for French officials decades ago.

Abandonment and Revival

The resort was ruined when the French left Vietnam. The villas collapsed, and visitors plummeted to less than 40,000 a year. There were no restaurants or any modern facilities at the Ba Na Hills at the time.

Then in 2007, the Sun Group began a massive restoration. The first cable car line opened on 25 March 2009, which earned a Guinness World Record for the longest single-track cable car (5,042m). A second line in 2013 broke the record again at 5,801 metres.

Golden Bridge and Global Fame

In June 2018, the Golden Bridge (Cầu Vàng) was opened. The bridge is a 150-metre walk suspended between massive stone hands, which immediately became a worldwide icon.

Ba Na Hills has since been awarded the World’s Leading Iconic Tourist Destination, Asia’s Leading Theme Park (four years in succession) by the World Travel Awards.
