To avoid mishaps and make sure you get the most out of your trip, it’s important to have all your essentials packed. Not sure what to pack? Then here’s our Vietnam travel essentials checklist for your trip to the “Land of the Blue Dragon”:

Why Is Vietnam So Popular?

Vietnam was the third most visited Southeast Asian country by the end of 2024. This largely comes down to its improved accessibility, visa free-policy and recent hotel openings. With that said, Vietnam has always been known for its diverse geography and culture.

People from all corners of the world flock over to experience these features, as they prevail throughout the country:

  • Cities

Vietnam is made up of three major cities; Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh. Each city is different to one another as they represent a unique aspect of Vietnam.

Hanoi is the capital known for its French colonial architecture, Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) is the largest, most bustling city, while Da Nang is the port city located by the coast. There are also many other cities throughout the country, each with their own ch

  • Landscapes

The landscapes in Vietnam are even more diverse than the cities. The country is mostly made up of mountains, fields, hills and forests, while its coastlines are dotted with beautiful beaches.

These landscapes, along with its rich history, also give rise to unique heritage sites—eight to be exact! This means Vietnam has one of the most heritage sites in Southeast Asia, second behind Indonesia.

  • History

Vietnam’s history is littered with complexity, making it one the most historically rich countries in Asia. The country has ancient roots dating back at least 40,000 years.

They were then annexed by the Han dynasty around 111 BC before gaining independence in 939 AD. This eventually led to periods of expansion and foreign conflict between the 11th and 19th century.

The 20th century was also marked with turmoil, as Vietnam endured French rule and the devastating Vietnam War.

  • Culture

Vietnam has a diverse culture spanning thousands of years. This is shaped by their unique ethnic groups, along with French and Chinese influences. These influences can be seen through food, language, architecture, its people and the way they treat each other.

All of this comes together to offer an experience that is uniquely Vietnamese.

Primary Vietnam Travel Essentials

  • Bag ✅: Get yourself a proper backpack as you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Lugging around a suitcase is never a good idea especially in a backpacking country like Vietnam. Remember to choose a bag that’s easy to carry, waterproof and capacious.

A small bag like a fanny pack can also come in handy, as you can keep small items like passports, phones and wallets.

  • Clothes ✅: Pack lightweight, loose-fitting clothes as Vietnam is normally hot and humid. You will also need a light rain jacket or poncho in case it rains. Northern Vietnam tends to be colder too, so don’t forget to pack a sweater.

  • Footwear ✅: A pair of breathable sneakers for city walking should do the trick. You may also want to bring hiking boots if you plan to trek, and flip flops if you plan to visit the beach.

  • Accessories ✅: Sun protection like hats and sunglasses is highly recommended. They’ll keep you shaded when you walk around the city or beaches.

  • Toiletries ✅: Packing toiletries saves you the hassle of buying supplies once you’ve arrived. On top of your regular toiletries, don’t forget to pack insect repellent and sunscreen.

Malaria is a significant risk in Vietnam and the sun can get really strong especially during the summer.

  • Health Kit ✅: Having a basic health kit is a good idea no matter where you go. This includes having all your prescribed medication, pain relievers, bandages and antiseptic wipes.

  • Electronics ✅: Bring all your necessary electronics and most importantly, an adapter. Vietnam primarily uses type A, C or F, with the standard voltage being 220V at 50Hz.

Secondary Vietnam Travel Essentials

  • Cash ✅: Don’t forget to exchange your cash for some Vietnamese dong (VND). While there are many cashless outlets throughout the country, cash is still widely used especially in street vendors and local markets.

  • Refillable Water Bottle ✅: Reduce plastic use with a refillable water bottle. Carry your bottle wherever you go and you can always fill it up no matter where you are. Vietnam is also humid all year round so it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day.

  • SIM Card ✅: Remember to buy a travel SIM if you don’t plan to use mobile roaming. Travel SIM’s are cheap in Vietnam and opting for basic plans should suffice. Nonetheless, avoid buying SIM’s from the airport as they can be more expensive.

  • Mobile Apps ✅: The 3 main apps all travelers should have are; Grab, Google Maps and Google Translate. These are non-negotiable as they either help you catch a ride, find food, find your way around or help you converse with the locals.

Other apps that may come in handy include Agoda, Klook and Vietnammm (local food app).

  • Pack all chargers and cables in separate bags. Keeping them separately will prevent tangling with other items, making it easier to find what you need.

  • Check if your bank cards and credit cards are activated for international use. This can be done from website portals or by calling customer service.

  • Bring your health kit wherever you go. This includes all your prescribed medication, basic first-aid items, as well as other essentials like insect repellent, sunscreen and hand sanitiser.

  • Bring extra plastic rolls and ziplocks bags for packing and storing. They’ll come in handy when you need to separate dirty clothes or protect other sensitive items from exposure.

  • Pack as light as possible especially if you plan to backpack most of the time. Bring clothes that are breathable as they are lighter than regular clothes.
